Pierwotnym fortem portugalskim był trójkątny fort o nazwie Fort „Triquillimale”. Ostatecznie fort został zdobyty przez Holendrów w 1639 r., rozbierając go i odbudowując zmieniając jego nazwę na Fort Frederick.
