담바콜라 파투나(Dambakola Patuna)는 인도 황제인 아쇼카의 딸 상가미타(Sanghamitta)가 보리수 묘목을 가지고 이곳에 도착했다는 전설과 관련된 매우 중요한 불교 종교 장소입니다. 묘목은 자라서 Sri Maha Bodhi가 되었으며, 지구상에서 가장 오래된 나무 중 하나로 기록되어 현재 Anuradhapura 시에서 Sri maha bhodhi로 알려져 있습니다. 이 사건을 기념하기 위해 Devanampiya Tissa 왕이 이 사원을 지었습니다.
