공원은 1954년에 스리랑카에서 가장 큰 저수지인 Senanayake Samudra의 주요 집수 지역으로 설립되었으며, 이 저수지는 Galoya Development Program의 일환으로 Inginiyagala의 Galoya 댐을 막고 있습니다.
공원은 일년 내내 코끼리 개체수로 유명합니다. 저녁 보트를 타는 동안 방문객들은 섬의 울창한 녹지를 먹기 위해 저수지를 가로 질러 헤엄 치는 코끼리 떼를 관찰 할 수 있습니다. 이 장엄한 광경은 매년 3월에서 7월 사이에 가장 잘 관찰됩니다. 보트를 타고 방문객들은 "새의 섬"에 둥지를 틀고 있는 새 떼를 관찰할 수도 있습니다. 이른 아침과 저녁에 지프를 탈 수 있습니다.
공원에는 코끼리, 표범, 랑구르, 고유종인 토크원숭이, 나무늘보, 멧돼지, 스리랑카 삼바르사슴, 추축사슴, 물소 등 32종의 포유류가 기록되어 있습니다. 파충류 종 중에서 방문자는 철새와 고유종을 모두 포함하는 150종에 가까운 조류 종과 함께 Mugger 악어와 별거북을 목격할 수 있습니다. 고유종 중에는 하급 부관인 반점부리펠리칸과 붉은얼굴말코하가 있습니다. 탱크를 자주 찾는 물새 중 일부는 작은 휘파람 오리, 인도 가마우지, 오리엔트 시어터 및 회색 왜가리와 다양한 나비, 양서류 및 랩터를 포함합니다.
